The "Festival of Festivals" — ten days where all of Nagaland's Naga tribes gather at Kisama to share music, food, dance and centuries of tradition.
OVERVIEW
Started in 2000 by the Nagaland government, the Hornbill Festival brings all major Naga tribes together at Kisama Heritage Village, each hosting their own traditional morung. Expect war dances, folk songs, indigenous games, a craft bazaar, tribal food stalls and an evening rock music contest — all set against Nagaland's green hills. It's named after the hornbill bird, a symbol of courage in Naga folklore.

Fly into Dimapur Airport, Nagaland's only airport, with connections from Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati. From Dimapur, it's roughly a 3-hour shared taxi or bus ride to Kohima.
Dimapur is also the nearest railhead, well connected to major Indian cities. Budget travelers often combine train + shared sumo (shared taxi) to keep costs low.
The festival ground at Kisama is about 12 km from Kohima. Shared taxis run regularly during festival days, or stay closer at Kigwema village, right next to the venue.
